What happens on my first visit?

What To Expect At Your First Dental Appointment

Creating healthy, confident smiles for life is our mission, and we are glad you have taken the first step. Regular dental appointments are an important part of maintaining your overall health and well-being.

Arrival and Check-In

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a Patient Coordinator who will:

  • Check you in
  • Notify the team of your arrival
  • Verify insurance, if applicable
  • Guide you through any necessary new patient paperwork

To save time, complete the new patient forms in your appointment confirmation email before you arrive. A link to the forms is also available on the office location page.

Initial Assessment

Once the paperwork is complete, a team member will escort you to a treatment room. Here, they will:

  • Review your dental and medical history
  • Discuss any dental health concerns or issues

A dental assistant will then take digital x-rays for the dentist to review. Digital x-rays have very low radiation compared to traditional x-rays. For more information, speak with your dentist or dental assistant.

Comprehensive Exam

As a new patient, you will see the dentist for a comprehensive exam, which includes:

  • Discussing your health history and any concerns
  • Possibly taking your blood pressure to ensure you are in good health

If you are anxious about your appointment, let us know. Your comfort is a priority, and we will work to make your visit as smooth and comfortable as possible. During the exam, the dentist will:

  • Review your dental x-rays
  • Complete an oral cancer screening, examining your jaw, neck, tongue, and mouth

This initial exam, which lasts about an hour, is crucial for identifying issues like gum disease or cavities. Based on the findings, your dentist will develop a personalized treatment plan and discuss your options. If you need specialized dental care, we have dental specialists on staff, so no referral is needed.

Cleaning

At your first visit, you may not receive a cleaning. The dentist will determine if it is the appropriate treatment for your specific oral health. Certain conditions may require other treatments before a cleaning. Once your oral health is stabilized, you can expect to have your exam and cleaning/hygiene appointment together.

We look forward to helping you achieve a healthy, confident smile for life.

Do we do all cosmetic procedures?

We perform all cosmetic dental procedures here at Making Awesom e Smiles. Cosmetic dentistry requires advanced technical skills and an artistic eye. At Making Awesome Smiles our qualified dentists are renowned for delivering stunning, natural-looking results with exceptional care. While some cosmetic procedures are more complex and require specialized care, many are fairly simple.

What if I have not had a cleaning in a while?

We will treat you accodingly and advise you on anything that we see as being a problem. Regular dental cleanings also contribute to overall health beyond just the mouth. There is a growing body of evidence linking oral health to systemic health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Poor oral hygiene and untreated dental diseases can lead to chronic inflammation and infection, which can have negative impacts on other parts of the body. By maintaining good oral hygiene and having regular professional cleanings, you can help reduce the risk of these associated health problems and promote overall well-being.
